The X-ray Process

X-rays are standard procedures. Your doctor and radiologist will determine the area to be examined. If they’re looking at your extremities, such as your legs or arms, you may want to wear loose clothing that is easy to move around in.

Different types of X-rays are used for different purposes. When visiting our X-ray facilities in Pretoria, Kempton Park or Germiston Doctors may order a mammogram to examine breasts, or they may order an X-ray with a barium enema to get a closer look at the gastrointestinal tract.

Always tell your doctor or radiologist if you have a metal implant from a prior surgery. Metal implants can block X-rays from passing through your body and creating a clear image.

Once you’re prepared, your X-ray tech or radiologist will tell you how to position your body. They usually ask people to lie, sit, or stand in several positions during the test. They may take images while you stand in front of a specialized plate that contains X-ray film or sensors.
